Aetna vs. Delta Dental: What St. Charles Patients Should Know
Aetna and Delta Dental are two of the most common dental insurance plans we see at Bliss Dental Center in St. Charles, IL. Both are widely accepted and both can save you a significant amount on care — but they work a little differently. Here is what Fox Valley patients should understand before booking a visit.

How both plans are similar
Most Aetna and Delta Dental plans are PPO-style plans. That means you can see an in-network dentist for the lowest out-of-pocket cost, and both typically follow the same general structure: preventive care (exams and routine cleanings) covered at or near 100%, basic work like fillings covered around 70–80%, and major work like crowns and dentures covered around 50%, subject to your annual maximum.
Where they differ
- Network size: Delta Dental operates one of the largest dentist networks in the country, while Aetna’s dental network is also broad but structured differently across its PPO and DMO products.
- Plan tiers: Aetna offers both PPO and DMO/HMO-style dental plans; the DMO versions require you to use in-network providers. Delta Dental’s PPO and Premier tiers affect how much of the bill is covered.
- Annual maximums and waiting periods: These vary by employer group, so two people “with Delta Dental” can have very different benefits.
Bliss Dental works with both. You can read more on our Aetna dentist and Delta Dental dentist pages, or our general PPO dental insurance overview.
Which is “better”?
Neither is universally better — the right plan is the one your employer offers and the one your dentist accepts. The most important question isn’t the brand on the card; it’s whether your dentist is in-network and how much of your treatment is covered. If you have a gap, we’ll explain dental financing options so cost never delays needed care.
