Sedation Dentistry in St. Charles, IL — Anxiety-Free Dental Care
Relax comfortably during any dental procedure — nitrous oxide and oral sedation options
If the thought of visiting the dentist makes your heart race, you’re not alone. Dental anxiety affects an estimated 36% of adults, and for some, it keeps them from getting the care they need for years. At Bliss Dental in St. Charles, IL, we believe no one should avoid the dentist out of fear. That’s why Dr. Aqil Valika, DDS and Dr. Subhan Manzoor, DDS offer sedation dentistry — a safe, effective way to relax through any procedure.
Whether your anxiety is mild (a little nervous in the chair) or severe (you’ve postponed dental care for years), we have a sedation option that fits. Our goal is simple: meet you where you are, and help you finally get the comfortable, judgment-free dental care you deserve.
Sedation Options at Bliss Dental
Nitrous Oxide ("Laughing Gas")
The most common form of mild sedation, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose. You stay fully awake and aware, but feel deeply relaxed and calm — almost like a warm, floaty sensation. Within minutes of removing the mask, the effects wear off completely, so you can drive yourself home. Nitrous is ideal for routine procedures, mild anxiety, and patients who prefer a gentle option.
Oral Conscious Sedation
For deeper anxiety or longer procedures, we may prescribe an oral sedative (typically a small pill taken about an hour before your appointment). You’ll feel drowsy and relaxed — many patients describe it as a “haze” — but you remain conscious and able to respond. You’ll need a friend or family member to drive you home, and you’ll likely have little memory of the appointment.
Who Is a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry can be a great fit for adults and teens who:

- Have sensitive teeth or low pain tolerance

Frequently Asked Questions
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes — sedation dentistry is widely regarded as safe when administered by trained dental professionals. Our team carefully reviews your medical history before any sedation appointment and monitors your vital signs throughout the procedure. Both nitrous oxide and oral sedation have decades of safety data behind them.
Will I be unconscious during sedation dentistry?
No. Both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation keep you awake and able to respond — you’ll just feel deeply relaxed and calm. You won’t be “put under” the way you might be for surgery. Many patients have little memory of the appointment afterward, especially with oral sedation.
How much does sedation dentistry cost in St. Charles, IL?
Costs vary by sedation type and the procedure being performed. Nitrous oxide is typically the most affordable option (often $50-$100 added to a procedure), while oral sedation is moderately priced. Some insurance plans cover sedation when it’s medically necessary — our team will verify your benefits and discuss costs upfront.
How do I know if sedation dentistry is right for me?
If you experience moderate to severe dental anxiety, have a strong gag reflex, need extensive dental work, or have a hard time sitting still, sedation may be a good fit. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Valika or Dr. Manzoor — we’ll talk through your concerns and recommend the safest, most comfortable option.
Can children receive sedation dentistry at Bliss Dental?
For most pediatric patients, we use behavior management techniques and nitrous oxide when needed. Our team is gentle and patient with children. For complex pediatric cases requiring deeper sedation, we may refer to a pediatric specialist. Call us at (630) 549-7916 to discuss your child’s needs.
Sedation Dentistry in St. Charles, IL — Calm, Judgment-Free Care for Anxious Patients
### You are not alone — and you are not "being dramatic" If the thought of sitting in a dental chair makes your chest tighten, your hands sweat, or your stomach drop, you are in very good company. An estimated one in three adults in the U.S. avoids the dentist because of fear or anxiety. At Bliss Dental Center in St. Charles, IL, many of the patients we see have not been to a dentist in years — sometimes a decade or more. That is exactly the kind of patient sedation dentistry was built for, and it is exactly the kind of patient we know how to take care of.
We do not lecture. We do not shame. We listen first, explain everything in plain language, and let you set the pace. Our two dentists, Dr. Aqil Valika, DDS and Dr. Subhan Manzoor, DDS, practice what we call gentle dentistry: trauma-aware, slow when it needs to be slow, and built around your comfort.
Sedation dentistry can help you if you experience any of the following:
- General dental anxiety or panic in the chair
- A strong gag reflex that makes cleanings or X-rays feel impossible
- A history of a bad dental experience or dental trauma (childhood or adult)
- Difficulty sitting still, sensory sensitivities, or trouble getting numb from local anesthetic alone
- A long, complex appointment (multiple fillings, an extraction with a bone graft, or several restorative procedures stacked into one visit)
- Special healthcare needs that make a standard visit overwhelming
If any of that sounds like you, please keep reading — and then call us at (630) 549-7916 when you are ready. There is no pressure, and the first conversation is just a conversation.
Sedation options we offer at Bliss Dental Center
We offer two in-office sedation options designed to cover the vast majority of anxious-patient needs. For patients who require deeper sedation, we coordinate with a trusted referring specialist.
1. Nitrous oxide ("laughing gas")
How it works. You breathe a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small, soft mask placed over your nose. Within a few minutes you will feel a warm, floaty calm settle in. You stay fully awake, you can answer questions, and you can stop the gas at any time.
Who it is for. Nitrous is our most-used option. It is ideal for mild to moderate anxiety, for patients with a strong gag reflex, for kids who need a little help relaxing during a filling, and for anyone who simply wants to take the edge off a routine cleaning.
What it feels like. Most people describe it as a light, pleasant tingling, sometimes a little giggly — hence the nickname. You will not lose consciousness. You will remember the appointment.
Recovery. Nitrous oxide wears off within about 5 minutes after we switch you to pure oxygen at the end of your visit. You can drive yourself home and return to work or school the same day.
Cost. Nitrous oxide is typically an additional $50–$150 added to your procedure fee, depending on length of use.
2. Oral conscious sedation
How it works. About an hour before your appointment, you take a prescription pill (commonly a benzodiazepine such as triazolam or diazepam — ). By the time you sit down in our chair, you are deeply relaxed, drowsy, and far less aware of sights, sounds, and time passing.
Who it is for. Oral sedation is the right step up when nitrous alone is not enough — for moderate to high dental anxiety, for patients with significant past trauma, or for longer restorative appointments where comfort over a 2- to 3-hour window matters.
What it feels like. Most patients are awake but very relaxed and often remember little about the procedure afterward. You can still respond to us, but the appointment will feel like it flew by.
Recovery. Oral sedation lingers in your system for several hours. You will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from the appointment, and you should plan to rest at home for the rest of the day. No driving, no work, no important decisions until the next morning.
Cost. Pricing for oral sedation varies by appointment length and the medication prescribed. We will quote it during your consultation so there are no surprises.
3. IV sedation (by referral)
True intravenous (IV) sedation requires a separate license and dedicated monitoring equipment. For patients who need IV-level sedation — for example, full-mouth rehabilitation in a single visit or surgical extractions with significant complexity — we coordinate care with a trusted board-certified oral surgeon or dental anesthesiologist in the Fox Valley area.
We will handle the introduction, share your records, and stay involved in your overall treatment plan so nothing falls through the cracks.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes — when it is administered by a trained dentist with proper monitoring, sedation dentistry has an excellent safety record. Before we sedate you, we:
- Review your full medical history, current medications, and any allergies
- Take baseline vitals (blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation)
- Monitor your vitals continuously throughout the appointment with a pulse oximeter
- Keep emergency reversal medications and oxygen on hand at all times
- Tailor the dose to your weight, age, and health status
If anything in your medical history makes a particular sedation option a poor fit for you, we will tell you up front and walk through alternatives. Your safety is not negotiable.
Sedation for children
Most kids do not need sedation. With a calm, kid-friendly approach — what dentists call behavior management — and a little nitrous oxide if needed, the vast majority of pediatric appointments at Bliss go smoothly. Nitrous is gentle, fast-acting, fast-clearing, and very well-studied in children.
For deeper pediatric sedation — for example, a young child who needs significant restorative work in a single visit, or a child with special healthcare needs — we refer to a board-certified pediatric dentist or pediatric anesthesiologist with the specialized training and equipment that pediatric sedation requires.
Does insurance cover sedation dentistry?
Sometimes — and it is worth checking. Many dental plans (and Illinois Medicaid in some cases) will cover sedation when it is documented as medically necessary — for example, for surgical extractions, for patients with documented severe dental phobia, or for patients with disabilities. Coverage rules vary widely between plans.
We will verify your benefits before your appointment and give you a written estimate of what insurance is expected to cover and what you can expect to pay out of pocket. We accept most major PPO plans and Illinois Medicaid (Public Aid) for qualifying services. For uncovered balances, we offer financing through CareCredit and Cherry.
Why patients across the Fox Valley choose Bliss for sedation
Patients drive to our St. Charles office from Geneva, Batavia, South Elgin, West Chicago, Aurora, Naperville, Bartlett, Streamwood, and Oswego because we have built our entire practice around the patient who is afraid of the dentist. That is not a marketing line — it is the reason both of our doctors went into general dentistry the way they did. If your last dentist made you feel rushed, judged, or talked down to, that is not what happens here.
