What “PPO” actually means
PPO stands for Preferred Provider Organization. With a PPO dental plan you can see any dentist you like, but you’ll pay the least when you choose an in-network provider who has agreed to discounted rates with your insurer. Bliss Dental is in-network with major PPO plans — see our PPO dental insurance page for the full list, including Aetna and Delta Dental.
The 100 / 80 / 50 rule
Most PPO plans follow a familiar coverage structure:
- 100% preventive — exams, X-rays, and routine cleanings are usually fully covered, so there’s no reason to skip them.
- ~80% basic — fillings and simple extractions.
- ~50% major — crowns, bridges, and dentures.
You’ll also have an annual maximum (the most your plan pays per year) and a deductible (what you pay before coverage kicks in). Preventive visits usually don’t count against your maximum — another reason to use them.
Tips for new patients
Use your preventive benefit twice a year, schedule major work strategically across plan years to stretch your annual maximum, and don’t let benefits expire unused at year-end. Older patients on Medicare or retiree plans should review our senior dental care page, since dental coverage works differently from medical Medicare. New here? Start on our new patients page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see Bliss Dental with an out-of-network PPO?
Yes — PPO plans let you see any dentist. You may simply pay a bit more out-of-pocket than with an in-network provider. We’ll estimate your costs first.
What’s the difference between a PPO and an HMO/DMO dental plan?
A PPO lets you choose any dentist with the best rates in-network. An HMO/DMO generally requires you to use assigned in-network providers. PPOs offer more flexibility.
Does my PPO cover cleanings 100%?
Most PPO plans cover two preventive cleanings and exams per year at or near 100%. Call (630) 549-7916 and we’ll confirm your specific benefit.
