Types of Dental Cleanings and When You Need Each

“Teeth cleaning” covers a few distinct procedures, and which one you need depends on your gum health:

Routine prophylaxis (regular cleaning). What most patients have done twice yearly. Removes plaque and tartar from above the gumline, polishes teeth, and includes a fluoride treatment. Takes 30 to 60 minutes. Most insurance covers at 100%.

Periodontal maintenance. For patients with a history of gum disease (periodontitis). Similar to a routine cleaning but includes deeper subgingival cleaning to keep treated gum disease from recurring. Typically every 3 to 4 months rather than every 6.

Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing). A treatment, not routine maintenance — for active gum disease. Scales tartar from below the gumline and smooths root surfaces so gums can reattach. Usually done in two visits (half the mouth each), with local anesthesia. Often the only way to halt active periodontitis.

Gross debridement. A precursor to a regular cleaning when there is so much tartar buildup that the hygienist cannot do an accurate exam. Removes the worst of the buildup so a comprehensive cleaning can follow.

If you have not had a cleaning in over 2 years, expect that we may recommend a gross debridement first or a deep cleaning depending on what we find.

How Often Should You Have Your Teeth Cleaned?

Standard recommendation: twice yearly (every 6 months). This works for most adults with healthy gums and good home care.

You may need cleanings more often if:

  • You have a history of gum disease — typically every 3 to 4 months
  • You have diabetes, especially poorly controlled — gum disease accelerates with diabetes
  • You smoke or use tobacco — accelerates plaque hardening and gum disease
  • You have dry mouth (often medication-related, common in seniors) — reduces saliva’s natural cleaning effect
  • You are pregnant — hormonal changes accelerate gingivitis
  • You have heavy plaque or tartar buildup despite good home care

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a teeth cleaning cost at Bliss Dental?

For patients with PPO dental insurance, routine cleanings are typically covered at 100% — your out-of-pocket is $0 for the cleaning itself (separate from x-rays or exam). For self-pay, a routine cleaning and exam runs $150 to $250 for established patients, $200 to $350 for new-patient comprehensive exams with x-rays.

Standard recommendation is twice yearly (every 6 months) for adults with healthy gums and good home care. Patients with a history of gum disease, diabetes, or tobacco use typically need cleanings every 3 to 4 months.

A regular cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar from above the gumline. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) treats active gum disease — it scales tartar from below the gumline and smooths root surfaces so gums can reattach. Deep cleaning is typically done in two visits with local anesthesia.

Often yes — we hold same-day slots for both routine and emergency needs. New patients typically have a comprehensive exam plus cleaning at the first visit, which takes about 60 to 90 minutes. Call (630) 549-7916 first thing in the morning.

It is fixable but may require more than a routine cleaning at the first visit. Heavy tartar buildup may need a gross debridement first, and if gum disease has set in, scaling and root planing may be needed. Drs. Valika and Manzoor will assess and recommend the right path. No judgment, just a plan.
