August is the right time to schedule kids' dental work — here is what to book and why

August fills up fast at our practice — and at most family dental practices across St. Charles, Geneva, and the Fox Valley. Reason: back-to-school dental checkups for kids. Catching cavities, applying sealants on newly erupted molars, and screening for orthodontic issues before the school year starts saves missed school days during the year and gets ahead of issues that only get more expensive over time. This post walks through what to schedule for kids and teens before the school year begins. From Dr. Aqil Valika at Bliss Dental Center.

Routine cleaning and exam. The basics: every child should have a cleaning and exam every 6 months. If your child’s last cleaning was in February, August is the natural time. If it was in March or April, late summer or early fall fits the 6-month rhythm. Cleanings include fluoride application, oral hygiene reinforcement (especially important for kids who are wearing braces or starting Invisalign), and a quick visual exam for cavities or other concerns. Most insurance covers two cleanings per year at 100%.

Sealants on permanent molars. When your child’s permanent molars erupt (around age 6 for the first set, age 12 for the second set), the chewing surfaces have deep grooves that trap food and are highly cavity-prone. Dental sealants — a thin protective resin coating — fill those grooves and prevent decay through the teen years. Painless, takes 5 minutes per tooth, lasts 5 to 10 years. One of the highest-value preventive procedures for kids. If your child is 6 to 14 and has not had sealants, ask about it at the back-to-school visit.

Orthodontic screening. Around age 7, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic screening — even though most kids do not need treatment until 11 to 13. The early screen catches things like severe crowding, open bites, crossbites, and jaw growth issues that benefit from early intervention. A back-to-school visit is the natural time to do this screening. We refer to orthodontists when timing is right; many cases simply get monitored over the next several years.

Sports mouth guards. If your child plays contact sports — football, hockey, lacrosse, basketball, soccer, wrestling — a custom sports mouth guard prevents the most common dental injuries (chipped teeth, knocked-out teeth, soft tissue lacerations). Custom guards fit better than boil-and-bite store guards, are much more comfortable, and kids actually wear them. Cost: $150 to $300 typically. Often partially covered by dental insurance.

Beating the August rush. Schedule by mid-July at the latest. Mid-August through Labor Day fills up rapidly with back-to-school appointments — patients who book in late August often cannot get in before the school year starts. Same-day appointments are sometimes available for emergencies but routine cleanings need 1 to 2 weeks of lead time during the back-to-school rush. Call (630) 549-7916 or use our online scheduler. See our children’s dentist page for more on pediatric care. — Dr. Aqil Valika, Bliss Dental Center.

From start to finish, he made the experience pain-free and provided compassionate care. He is someone who takes pride in the exceptional treatment he provides to his patients - and that is clear by his work. Not only is he a skilled dentist, but he has a fantastic bedside manner as well. I felt like he thoroughly answered all of my questions and guided me through each treatment step. I had an amazing experience at Bliss. My mom had a very difficult root canal done here and the whole process me and my mom felt very comfortable. We felt as we were in good hands. I loved how caring they were with everything and explained the whole process. We both felt as we walked out of that dental office that we were well informed on what was done and what needed to be done next. We had no questions left to ask by the time we left. I would recommend anyone who is looking to get ANY dental work to go here for anything the doctors and assistants will explain everything and will leave you happy with any results.
