Dental Bone Graft in St. Charles, IL

Bone grafting that prepares insufficient jawbone for dental implants — minor socket grafts at extraction through major sinus lifts and ridge augmentations

Looking for a dental bone graft in St. Charles, IL? Bone grafting prepares the jawbone for dental implants when natural bone is insufficient — common after long-standing tooth loss, advanced gum disease, or trauma. Bliss Dental performs minor socket grafts at the time of extraction (preserving bone for future implants) and major grafting procedures (sinus lifts, ridge augmentation) for more complex cases. Drs. Aqil Valika and Subhan Manzoor — call (630) 549-7916.

When Bone Grafting Is Needed

Several scenarios require bone grafting before or during implant placement:

Long-standing tooth loss. Once a tooth is missing, the surrounding jawbone gradually resorbs. After 6 to 12 months without a tooth or implant in place, bone loss is typically significant. After several years, bone may be insufficient for an implant without grafting.

Severe gum disease (periodontitis). Advanced periodontitis destroys the bone supporting teeth. Even after extraction and gum disease control, a graft is often needed before implant placement.

Insufficient bone in upper back jaw. The maxillary sinus sits above the upper molars; many patients have only a thin layer of bone between the tooth socket and the sinus. A “sinus lift” graft adds bone in this area to support upper-back-jaw implants.

Trauma or congenital narrow jaw. Some patients have naturally thin or narrow jaw ridges that need ridge augmentation before implants.

For implants generally, see our implants page or implant cost page.

Types of Bone Grafts at Bliss Dental

Socket preservation graft. Done at the time of tooth extraction. After the tooth comes out, a small amount of grafting material is placed in the socket to maintain the bone shape during healing. Cost: $300 to $600. Recovery: minimal, blends with extraction recovery.

Ridge augmentation graft. For patients who lost a tooth long ago and now need an implant. The ridge is augmented (built up) with grafting material before implant placement. Cost: $500 to $1,500 per site depending on size. Healing: 4 to 6 months before implant placement.

Sinus lift graft. For upper-back-jaw implants where sinus floor is too low. The sinus membrane is gently lifted and grafting material placed underneath. Cost: $1,500 to $3,000+. Healing: 4 to 9 months before implant placement.

Block graft. For severe bone loss requiring substantial bone gain. A small piece of bone is harvested (usually from the jaw) and grafted to the deficient site. Cost: $2,000 to $4,000+. Healing: 6 months.

Most grafting procedures use a combination of synthetic graft material, processed donor bone, or your own bone. We discuss material options at your consultation.

Recovery and What to Expect

Most bone graft procedures are done under local anesthesia with optional sedation. The procedure itself is typically pain-free — you feel pressure but no sharp pain. Post-op:

  • Mild swelling and bruising for 3 to 7 days
  • Soft foods only for 1 to 2 weeks
  • Avoid the surgical site when brushing for the first week
  • No smoking — significantly impairs graft healing
  • Antibiotic prescribed in most cases
  • Over-the-counter pain reliever usually sufficient

The graft itself heals over 4 to 9 months as your body integrates the grafting material with native bone. Implant placement happens after this healing period.

Insurance coverage for bone grafting is variable. Some PPO plans cover grafting under major restorative when associated with a covered procedure (extraction, implant). Others exclude grafting entirely. We verify before treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a bone graft for my dental implant?

If you lost a tooth more than 6 to 12 months ago, the jawbone in that area has likely resorbed (shrunk). Implants need adequate bone height and width to integrate properly. Bone grafting builds up the deficient bone before or during implant placement.

Costs vary by graft type. Socket preservation graft (at extraction): $300-$600. Ridge augmentation: $500-$1,500. Sinus lift: $1,500-$3,000+. Block graft: $2,000-$4,000+. Insurance coverage is variable — some PPO plans cover grafting under major restorative.

The procedure itself is done under local anesthesia and is pain-free. Post-op discomfort for 3 to 7 days is typical — usually managed with over-the-counter pain reliever. Avoid smoking (impairs healing) and stick to soft foods for the first 1 to 2 weeks.

4 to 9 months depending on graft type and size. Socket preservation grafts heal alongside extraction recovery. Ridge augmentation typically requires 4 to 6 months before implant placement. Sinus lift grafts typically require 4 to 9 months.

Failure is uncommon (around 5%) but possible. Risk factors: smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, poor surgical site hygiene, certain medications (bisphosphonates, some immunosuppressants). If a graft fails, it can typically be redone with adjusted protocol. Drs. Valika and Manzoor screen for risk factors at consultation.
