Cracked Tooth? Here's the 10-Step Emergency Guide for St. Charles Patients
Cracked Tooth? Here’s the 10-Step Emergency Guide for St. Charles Patients
You bit down on something hard—maybe a popcorn kernel or a piece of ice—and felt that sickening “crack.” Now you have a sharp pain every time you chew or breathe in cold air.
A cracked tooth is one of the most common dental emergencies we see at Bliss Dental in St. Charles. But unlike a clean break, a crack can be tricky. It might be invisible to the eye, but the pain is unmistakable.
Your competitor down the street might tell you to “wait and see,” but we know that a crack never heals on its own. It only gets deeper.
Here is your 10-Step Emergency Action Plan to save your tooth and stop the pain, right here in the Fox Valley.
Step 1: Don’t Panic, But Don’t Wait
Urgency: High.
The longer a crack is left untreated, the deeper it travels toward the nerve. If it reaches the root, the tooth may need to be extracted. Immediate action is the difference between a simple filling and a specialized root canal in St. Charles.
Step 2: Rinse with Warm Water
Gently rinse your mouth to wash away any food particles or debris. Do not use cold water, as the cracked tooth will be hypersensitive to temperature.
Step 3: Locate the Fragment (If Possible)
Did a piece of the tooth actually break off? If so, save it! Put it in a small container with milk or saliva. In some cases (like with front teeth), we can bond the fragment back on.
Step 4: Manage the Pain (The Safe Way)
Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen (Advil). Warning: Do NOT put aspirin directly on the gum or tooth. This is an old wives’ tale that causes chemical burns on your gums.
Step 5: Cover Sharp Edges
If the crack has left a jagged edge that is cutting your tongue or cheek, cover it with a piece of sugar-free gum or dental wax (available at Walgreens/CVS on Randall Rd) until you can get to our office.
Step 6: Avoid Eating on That Side
This sounds obvious, but “testing it” to see if it still hurts can deepen the crack. Switch to a soft diet (yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes) immediately.
Step 7: Call Bliss Dental for a “Same-Day” Appointment
We prioritize cracked teeth because we know they are painful. When you call (630) 549-7916, tell us: “I think I cracked a tooth and I’m in pain.” We will do our best to get you in the same day.
Step 8: The Diagnosis (Digital X-Rays)
When you arrive at our St. Charles office, we won’t just poke at it. We use 3D Digital Imaging and fiber-optic lights to find hairline cracks that traditional X-rays might miss. We need to know exactly how deep the crack goes.
Step 9: The Repair (Same-Day Crown)
Here is where Bliss Dental differs from others. If your tooth needs a crown to hold it together, you won’t need a temporary.
We use CEREC Technology to design, mill, and place your permanent ceramic crown in one visit. You walk in with a cracked tooth and walk out with a permanent, strong restoration in about 90 minutes.
Step 10: The Long-Term Protection (Night Guard)
Most cracked teeth are caused by bruxism (teeth grinding). Once we fix your tooth, we don’t want it to break again.
We will likely recommend a custom-fitted night guard. Think of it as an insurance policy for your new smile.
Don’t Let a Crack Become an Extraction
Your main competitor might rank high for “cracked tooth,” but Bliss Dental is the office that can fix it today with same-day technology.
If you suspect a cracked tooth, don’t wait for the pain to become unbearable.
